Recycle Tip:
Bring your own beverage container to work for reuse, instead of using disposal cups.

RECYCLING
Means Being a Good Steward of the Earth

Recycling uses less energy and produces less pollution than making things from scratch.

Throwing things away is a waste of the energy and the resources taken to make the product. Reducing the number of things that need to be thrown away, reduces the amount of materials which have to be quarried and mined.

For example:

  • Making aluminum cans from old ones uses one twelfth of the energy to make them from raw materials.
  • For glass bottles, 315,000 grams of CO2 is saved per ton of glass recycled after taking into account the transportation and processing
  • Making bags from recycled polythene takes one third the Sulfur Dioxide and half the Nitrous Oxide, than making them from scratch.

What is Meant by "Carbon Footprint"?

Carbon footprint is an estimate of the climate change of an activity - such as making a product, living a lifestyle or managing a building.

Typically, carbon footprint is calculated by estimating the CO2 emissions that a particular activity causes, as well as any emissions of other greenhouse gases (i.e., methane and nitrous oxide). For simplicity, all these impacts are added together and expressed as a single number in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e): the amount of CO2 that would create the same amount of warming.

Carbon emissions are known to be a major cause of climate change. The fact that global warming exists and that humans are contributing to it doesn't mean we have to just sit back and accept the consequences. Measuring and reducing your emissions can reduce your impact on the environment and help reduce the effects of global warming.
